The Electric Distribution Program supports distribution grid modernization, through development and use of advanced sensor, communication, control, and information technologies to enable GridWise™ operations of all distribution systems and components for interoperability and seamless integration.

The term GridWise denotes the operating principle of a modernized electric infrastructure framework where open but secure system architecture, communication techniques, and associated standards are used throughout the electric grid to provide value and choices to electricity consumers.

The Electric Distribution Program addresses the critical technology area—Distributed Sensors, Intelligence, Smart Controls, and Distributed Energy Resources—identified in the National Electric Delivery Technologies Roadmap, which defines technology pathways to achieving the Grid 2030 Vision.

The Electric Distribution Program operates the Electric Distribution Transformation (EDT) Program and the GridWise Initiative, both within the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Electricity Delivery & Energy Reliability (OE), which is leading a national effort to help modernize and expand America's electric delivery system to ensure economic and national security.
